The Chevrolet Suburban Celebrates its 85th Year of Production

In 2020, Chevrolet's full-size SUV will officially enter its 85th year of production, marking a new record in longevity for the American manufacturer, one of the world's leading automakers operating in more than 100 countries since 1911 and selling more than 4 million cars and trucks per year.

Since 1935, the Chevrolet Suburban has given you ample space and impressive towing capacity. When it was launched before the outbreak of World War II, it could accommodate eight people, while the removable seats offered a large 3259-litre cargo space.

Christin Automobile, your Chevrolet Montreal dealership near Laval and Repentigny, has not been around as long as the Suburban, but has done business for nearly 50 years and is familiar with the full-size SUV, as well as all other Chevrolet, Buick and GMC products.

85 Years Old and Still Very Popular!

In 1935, rail transportation played an important role in the economic development of the United States. The American manufacturer from Detroit, that had been in business at the time for nearly 25 years, examined train cars and believed that they could adopt the same technology by transposing a train car onto an automobile platform. It was from this ingenious combination that the first Chevrolet Suburban was born – it would carry many passengers not on rails, but on roads throughout America.

Between 1941 and 1946, production of almost all civilian vehicles stopped, mainly because of the Second World War, which shook up the United States but also the whole world; only the Chevy and Suburban models continued to be produced, but these vehicles were destined for military service.

On the other hand, it was in the 1950s and 1960s that the Suburban took off, especially from 1955 and 1960 with the C and K versions with 2WD (C) and 4WD (K) models. Older generations will remember the three-door Suburban that was used by several ambulance companies in the 1970s. From 1973 to 1991, the full-size SUV expanded and offered in a four-door version, and between 1992 and 1999, the Suburban was given a new look with new technological features, four-wheel drive and a suspension system designed for better handling. At the turn of the millennium, the 10th generation Suburban was offered with new engines including a 5.3-litre and a 6.0-litre motor, and since 2015, the Suburban has been a front-runner the race, offering more features, a refined look and a wider range of advanced technologies. With a 6.2-litre V8 engine, the Suburban is very powerful and can now product 420 horsepower (compared to 60 in 1935) and 460 lb-ft of torque combined with a 4X4 system.

In short, over the course of its history, the Chevrolet Suburban has gone through 11 generations, all designed with the idea of developing the model while honouring its tradition. The 2020 Suburban is just as good as it was in the “good old days”, maintaining a good reputation and remaining very popular with personal transportation fleets. With its large towing capacity (3,765 kg), cargo spaces, interior comfort and spacious interior, the Suburban has stood the test of time.

For 85 years, SUV enthusiasts have been coming back to Chevrolet because they know the manufacturer offers a vehicle that has perfected over the years, meeting the needs of families who go on big adventures on the roads of Quebec, Canada and the United States. Since it's a full-size SUV, it offers plenty of room for passengers; the entire family will be comfortably seated without feeling cramped.
