What's New With the 2022 GMC Sierra?

The GMC Sierra is very popular amongst truck drivers the world over, with its rugged good looks and powerful choice of engines. But some changes were in order for the 2022 version, especially to the interior.

The 2022 GMC Sierra is now much more high-tech, integrating state-of-the-art features and introducing two new models to the lineup, while preserving the engines that have made it so popular in the past.

A more high-tech interior cabin

The 2022 GMC Sierra has been updated to include some of the latest technology. For one thing, the instrumentation features a 12.3-inch digital on-board display. As Willam Clavey of RPM confirms:

"We're now dealing with a significantly more sophisticated
and extremely eye-catching control station.
"

Meanwhile, at the centre of the dashboard, a brand new 13.4-inch infotainment system has been installed for your convenience. It now wirelessly integrates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto apps and features a number of other updated functionalities, including:

  • Google Assistant
  • Google Maps
  • Google Play
  • Amazon's Alexa

The system works in an intuitive manner, fully expanding and integrating a series of well-known functionalities.

Autonomous driving and optimal safety with Super Cruise

Technological advances are also on the menu in the driver assistance side, with the GMC Pro Safety suite including:

  • Collision Avoidance Systems
  • Front pedestrian detection
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane Remain Assist
  • Distance control

What's more, at the top of the range, you can enjoy hands-free driving thanks to the Super Cruise system. It takes the steering wheel off your hands on over 320,000 kilometres of North American highways. The vehicle can even change lanes without you even lifting a finger, that is, with no trailer!

New Denali Ultimate and AT4X Versions

Both the Denali and AT4 versions were already familiar faces in the lineup, due in part, to their luxurious off-road capabilities. The new Denali Ultimate and AT4X versions take these characteristics to new heights.

With the Denali Ultimate, there's simply no contest, it is the most luxurious vehicle in the lineup to date. The exterior I distinguished by its chrome grille, black accents and 22-inch wheels. Once inside, it offers a particularly elegant interior package with Alpine Umber leather upholstery, featuring unique stitching, as well as:

  • Leather and microsuede trimming
  • Engraved Denali Mountain motifs
  • Open pore walnut woodwork

One feature common to both new models is the heated and ventilated front seats, which can be adjusted to 16 positions. There's even an adjustable massage function, meaning you can choose to revitalize yourself between shifts or relieve lower back strain.

Meanwhile, the AT4X is born for off-roading, which means it includes mud tires and rocker panel guards. The chassis is designed to go off-road and includes proprietary mechanical components such as:

  • Electronically locked front and rear differentials
  • DSSV shocks by MultimaticMC
  • Calibrated suspension springs for optimized suspension
  • Dynamic Terrain Mode

Similarly, all versions have been revised in 2022 for an even more rugged look, including both new wheels and new metallic colours.

Four drivetrain units

Pop the hood and you'll find no shortage of options with the 2022 GMC Sierra. Similar to the previous model, there are five engines to choose from, including a turbocharged 4-cylinder, a V6, a turbodiesel 6-cylinder and two V8s.

The former engine has added torque this year, going from 348 to 420 lb-ft, all the while maintaining its 310 horsepower. The other two remain unchanged in capacity. All-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive come optional with each engine depending on your needs.

Check out the capabilities of the various engines and the versions in which they come standard:
